Rector Mark B. Rosenberg
Mark B. Rosenberg is the fifth president of Florida International University, the seventh largest public university in the nation. A political scientist specializing in Latin America, Dr. Rosenberg is the first FIU faculty member to ascend to the university’s presidency; he has more than 35 years of higher education experience. Under his leadership as president, FIU has increased enrollment to almost 50,000 students and now boasts Sun Belt Baseball and Football Championships, as well as a Football Bowl Championship.
From 2005 to 2008, Dr. Rosenberg served as chancellor for the Board of Governors of the State University System of Florida. As chancellor, Dr. Rosenberg led the system’s strategic development and financial planning and policy initiatives, working closely with Gov. Charlie Crist and the legislature to secure support for SUS priorities. The SUS currently enrolls more than 320,000 students, employs more than 12,000 faculty and operates a $3.4 billion state budget allocation.
Prior to becoming chancellor, Dr. Rosenberg was integrally involved in the expansion and development of FIU into a major public research university. As Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1998 to 2005, Dr. Rosenberg spearheaded the establishment of a law school in 2002 and a medical school in 2006. Under his leadership, FIU increased enrollment, implemented major campus construction projects, and was invited to join the select national honor society Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Rosenberg was also instrumental in moving FIU into the top tier of Carnegie Foundation research universities.
Dr. Rosenberg’s academic career began at FIU in 1976 as an assistant professor of political science. In 1979, he founded the FIU Latin American and Caribbean Center, which today is one of the nation’s premier federally-supported research and teaching centers focusing on the region. Dr. Rosenberg subsequently served as the Founding Dean of the College of Urban and Public Affairs and Vice Provost for International Studies. He has also been a Visiting Distinguished Research Professor at The Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, and a Visiting Professor at the Instituto Tecnologico de Monterrey (ITESM) in Mexico.
Dr. Rosenberg earned a B.A. in 1971 from Miami University of Ohio and a Ph.D. in Political Science with a graduate certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies from the University of Pittsburgh in 1976. He has written or co-edited seven books and numerous scholarly articles in leading journals. His latest book, The United States and Central America: Geopolitical Realities and Regional Fragility (2007), is a Harvard University project co-authored with Luis Guillermo Solis of Costa Rica. Governmental and media organizations have frequently sought Dr. Rosenberg’s expertise on Latin America. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, has testified before Congress numerous times, and has served as a consultant to the Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development.
Firmly committed to community service, Dr. Rosenberg has also been active with the Jewish Federation of Greater Miami and was a founding contributor to the Organization for Leadership Advancement in Miami. He is currently appointed to the Board of Directors of City National Bank of Florida; the Board of Directors for the Holocaust Memorial as part of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation; the Florida Association of Colleges and Universities’ Board of Directors; on the Executive Committee of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU)’s Science and Mathematics Teacher Imperative, as part the Board of Directors of the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU). He also serves as the Co-Chair of the Urban Serving Universities (USU) Student Performance Strand, and as Chair of the Beacon Council One Community One Goal (OCOG)’s Academic Leaders Council.
Previously, he has served on the Board of Governors of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, the South Florida Commission on the Nursing Shortage, the Florida Task Force on Educational Excellence, as the Treasurer of the President’s League for the Sun Belt Conference and as Co-Chair to the Board of Governors’ Facilities Task Force.
Dr. Rosenberg and his wife of 38 years, Rosalie, are members of Temple Menorah in Miami Beach. Both of their children, Benjamin and Ginelle, are FIU graduates.

Mark B. Rosenberg es el quinto Rector de la Universidad Internacional de la Florida (FIU), una de las 25 universidades más grandes del país. El Dr. Rosenberg, politólogo especializado en América Latina con más de 35 años de experiencia en la educación superior, es el primer miembro del profesorado de FIU que accede a la rectoría de la universidad. Bajo su liderazgo, la universidad ha aumentado su matrícula a más de 46,000 estudiantes y ha ganado los campeonatos de la liga atlética Sun Belt en béisbol y fútbol americano.
Desde el 2005 hasta el 2008, el Dr. Rosenberg se desempeñó como canciller de la Junta Directiva del Sistema Universitario Estatal (SUS) de la Florida. El SUS cuenta con más de 12,000 profesores, una matrícula de más de 320,000 estudiantes, y maneja un presupuesto de US$ 3.4 mil millones. En su rol como canciller, el Dr. Rosenberg lideró las iniciativas sobre políticas, planificación financiera, y desarrollo estratégico del sistema, trabajando en estrecha colaboración con el entonces gobernador Charlie Crist y la Legislatura del Estado.
Antes de ser canciller, el Dr. Rosenberg tuvo un rol fundamental en la transformación de FIU en una importante universidad pública de investigación. Como preboste y vicepresidente ejecutivo de asuntos académicos entre 1998 y el 2005, el Dr. Rosenberg encabezó los proyectos para establecer la Facultad de Derecho en el año 2002, y la Facultad de Medicina en el 2006. Bajo su liderazgo, FIU aumentó su matrícula, implementó importantes proyectos de construcción, y fue admitida en la exclusiva sociedad nacional académica de honor Phi Beta Kappa. El Dr. Rosenberg jugó además un papel decisivo en elevar a FIU al nivel superior de las universidades de investigación según la clasificación de la Fundación Carnegie.
El Dr. Rosenberg comenzó su carrera académica en FIU en 1976 como profesor adjunto de Ciencias Políticas. En 1979 fundó el Centro para América Latina y el Caribe (LACC) que está hoy considerado por el gobierno federal como uno de los centros nacionales de excelencia en la enseñanza e investigación de América Latina. Posteriormente, el Dr. Rosenberg fue decano fundador del Colegio de Asuntos Públicos y Urbanos, y vicerrector del área de estudios internacionales. Fue además profesor visitante distinguido de investigación en el Colegio Peabody de la Universidad de Vanderbilt, y profesor visitante en el Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) en México.
El Dr. Rosenberg tiene una licenciatura de la Universidad de Miami en Ohio, y un doctorado en ciencias políticas con especialización en América Latina y el Caribe de la Universidad de Pittsburgh. Ha escrito o coeditado siete libros y numerosos artículos académicos. Su último libro, Los Estados Unidos y América Central: realidades geopolíticas y fragilidad regional (2007), es un proyecto de la Universidad de Harvard que escribió conjuntamente con Luis Guillermo Solís de Costa Rica. El Dr. Rosenberg es miembro del Consejo de Relaciones Exteriores, y es consultado con frecuencia por agencias gubernamentales y medios de prensa sobre asuntos de América Latina. También ha testificado ante el Congreso en numerosas oportunidades, y ha sido consultor del Departamento de Estado y de la Agencia de los Estados Unidos para el Desarrollo Internacional.
