Dear members of the university community,
It is official:
FIU has become the youngest university to be designated “preeminent” by the State University System Board of Governors. We now join an elite group of top research institutions in Florida designated “Preeminent State Research Universities,” recognized as the state’s highest-performing research universities based on student success and research performance metrics.
It is a remarkable and monumental day in the history of FIU, one that affirms this university’s status as a transformative leader in academia and a research powerhouse on the state and national stage.

Preeminence status is the greatest representation of FIU – forward-thinking, innovative, unstoppable. Through a relentless pursuit of excellence in all our endeavors, our university has risen to the top in academic achievement, innovative research, and community impact – all in just a half century.
While being “preeminent” is reason enough to celebrate, I have more great news to share.
FIU has also earned the No.1 spot in the Florida Board of Governors performance-based funding model, recognized for outstanding results in key metrics such as four-year graduation rate, retention rate, cost of attendance
to students and employment of recent graduates. It’s the third time in four years that FIU achieves the top spot among state universities.
Preeminence and performance-based funding accolades come on the heels of a string of rankings and recognitions that underscore excellence. FIU was recently named the second most impactful university in the nation, and 13
th in the world, by the 2024 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. The Wall Street Journal also ranked us the No. 4 best public university in the nation. FIU also ranks No. 14 nationally among public universities for students’ return on investment, according to Degree Choices. We also earned the prestigious Carnegie Elective Classification for Leadership for Public Purpose for our commitment to developing leaders who serve the greater good.
Each member of this university community has played a role in our successes – our faculty members and researchers who are leading experts in their fields, our staff who provide instrumental support day after day, our students who inspire us with their curiosity, grit, and ingenuity, our alumni who are out in the world representing FIU with pride, and our community, which has stood by FIU since the very first day we opened our doors 52 years ago.
With success comes a responsibility to continue pushing boundaries, challenging ourselves to do better, and striving for excellence in everything we do. Panthers, as we celebrate these outstanding achievements, may we be inspired to stay the course in our upward trajectory for the next 50 years.
